Lesson 0
Accountability
Welcome to Lesson 0! Yeah!
Today we introduce the most important of the three foundational concepts of Fitness Frenzy - Accountability. It’s so foundational, that this is aptly named lesson 0. Before we can learn or do anything meaningful we need to truly commit to our own health. We need to accept that we control our own actions and that the right actions ultimately affect our well-being. No one can make you healthy and fit, but you. So today we are going to learn how to take responsibility for ourselves and possibly help others along the way.
*Note for my momma: tl;dr = Too Long; Didn’t Read. Each lesson has one.
tl;dr - Accountability is very important to living a long, healthy, and happy life. First and foremost have accountability for yourself - you have to treat yourself like you would a loved one. Only after that, can you help keep others accountable - that’s where the real reward is 🌈🎁
Ac·count·a·bil·i·ty
an obligation or willingness to accept responsibility
Accountability is an interesting thing. When you are at work you need to hold yourself accountable for your bosses, at school- for your teachers, at practice- for your coaches. If you don’t hold yourself accountable in these scenarios you’ll be fired, fail, or lose respectively. However, what happens if you need to hold yourself accountable for yourself? In my personal experience, it’s much, much harder. There are no deadlines and no "real“ repercussions if you fail. If you don’t hold yourself accountable for yourself, you don’t let down others- which for some reason seems easier to bear. However, it should be the other way around.
Treat yourself like someone you are responsible for helping - Rule 2 of 12 Rules for Life - Dr. Jordan B Peterson
Personal health and fitness are interesting pursuits because they’re for no one else but yourself (at least on the surface). And that’s why it’s easy to let it go to the wayside; I know I have before. Why carve out time to eat healthily and exercise when so many other people need you to be accountable for them? Well, here is the reality, without your health, you can’t really help others. Generally speaking, we need to stop neglecting ourselves. Going back to what Dr. Peterson said, treat yourself like you’re taking care of a loved one. Take a second, if you have unhealthy habits, would you subjugate your kids, friends, or family to them in good conscience? Why should you treat yourself any differently? And that’s why I think the phrase “Do as I say and not as I do” is a bunch of 💩. Be accountable to yourself first, only then can you truly help others out. Oh, and that doesn’t mean you have to be perfect ;)
The fun part is, once you’ve committed to making yourself better and start taking the actions to do so (this course will teach you how!), you can start cheering on others! Now, I started this lesson off with the example of being accountable for your bosses, teachers, and coaches, and it may have sounded like a bad thing. To the contrary! You may have heard the phrase: “it takes a village to raise a child”, well the same is true for your own personal health journey. You’ll want a village because support is cyclical ⭕(not cynical)- the more you succeed, the more you inspire others, the more others succeed, the more they inspire you. Plus, humans are social creatures, the journey is straight up more fun with others!
Alright, Christian, you’ve sold me. I want to make the commitment and hold myself accountable for myself. But how do I start building my village; my support network? Well, insert-your-beautiful-name-here, I’m glad you asked! In Fitness Frenzy you have the ability to add Accountabilibuddies. (Yes, you read that right) Think of them as friends on your favorite social media platform - once both parties agree to be buddies, you’ll be able to see everything (except progress photos) each other logs. Oh and a core principle of Fitness Frenzy is honesty - so you can only log for the current day - meaning if you miss, your buddies will know ;) It may sound harsh, but it’s that social dynamic that makes this platform so effective. If you like a good competition: you earn points by logging and multiply them by doing it consistently, the buddy with the most points wins!
Wow, Christian! That sounds great! I have some people in mind that would love to take the journey with me! How do I invite them?!
All you have to do is send them a link! This one!
